Sweet RevengeBy Sam Goldman
The first thing I noticed about Sweet Revenge, a great new bar in Bed-Stuy, was the aroma - kind of a bar's version of that new-car scent. The smell of new plush vinyl seats, wallpaper glue and the muggy Brooklyn night. Perhaps, it was to be expected; the bar only opened on Sept. 12, according to the friendly young lady behind the bar, Christine. Sweet Revenge has a very slight 1950's touch, with a gantry that Leo, who took the photos, described as Jetsons-esque, and it's stocked with your standard assortment of fine spirits. The beer selection is just about perfect, with a combination of old favorites on tap (Guinness and Stella) with some microbrew selections (Magic Hat's Circus Boy Hefeweizen and some sort of delicious pumpkin ale). The combination of the palm-tree decor, the '80s New Wave music at the perfect volume and the outdoor patio make this a thoroughly relaxing after-work watering hole. There's even a fake yule log inside an old black-and-white TV. According to Christine, Sweet Revenge is working on adding more outdoor seating and constructing a DJ booth. I honestly think a DJ booth might be a mistake, but I guess its one of those things that bars feel they need to deliver the clientele they desire. Those of you lucky enough to have prior knowledge of that new-car smell know the exhilarating feeling it brings; it lets you know that this is new, this is awesome, and Sweet Revenge is definitely awesome.
