Gimmie Noise

Well, it's another slow week for shows in NYC, but I'll give you a few to check out if you are so inclined. There are two shows by Canadian indie-popsters Sloan at Bowery Ballroom, a Southern rock bombast from My Morning Jacket, and an appearance from eccentric genius Daniel Johnston.

Sloan 6/19 and 6/20 with Bear Hands (6/19) and Golden Dogs (6/20) at Bowery Ballroom (Delancey St. New York, NY) $20 8pm

My roommate and I have a ritual every Sunday morning. We shake off Saturday night's hangover, meet up on the couch, and watch two hours of Degrassi: The Next Generation. It's wonderfully Canadian in its sensibilities and presents a slightly skewed view of high school from north of the border. So, it makes sense that Sloan is constantly referenced by Craig the sensitive indie rocker and is not so subtly featured hanging on Emma's bedroom wall. Sloan mixes Big Star with Superchunk if they both grew up with universal government health care. They've been putting out albums for years without much notice except from critics and pop junkies, so maybe it's time we started taking notice of their catchy power-pop songs.

My Morning Jacket 6/20 at Radio City Music Hall (1260 6th Ave. New York, NY) $39.50 7pm

Going from way up north to the deep south, the shows this week at least present some variety.  My Morning Jacket are playing Radio City Music Hall on Friday. If you like your rock 'n roll with a twang and Freebird-type guitar solos, or just want to meet a few heavyset guys with unkempt beards and western shirts, this is where you are going to want to be.

Daniel Johnston 6/20 at Warsaw (261 Driggs Ave. Brooklyn, NY) $25 8pm

And although he makes his home in Texas, there isn't anything all that southern about Daniel Johnston. His profile was raised considerably after a recent documentary about his struggle with schizophrenia (and, of course, his music) was released to widespread acclaim. The songs combine Beatles-type harmonies and structure with lyrical matter that ranges from the usual love songs to something much more out there. He seems to be playing a lot lately, but you never know when that's going to end.  So, I suggest getting out there and seeing him now while you have the chance.
