Drink Green

You've gone green.  You turn the lights off when you leave the room.  You have six different recycle bins.   And, you don't eat a vegetable grown more than 10 miles from your home. So, why are you still drinking booze laden with chemicals, pesticides, and enormous carbon footprints?

Each week at Lush Life, we'll feature a new way to stay green and drink your favorite spirits. This week, we'll take a look at Square One Vodka, America's first 100% certified organic spirit.

Chances are, the vodka you're putting in your cocktails isn't quite as organic as you think.  Most vodkas have traces of pesticides and chemical toxins used to grow the potatoes, corn, grapes, or grain used to give your vodka that ultra premium flavor.  Then, in distillation, typical vodkas use phosphates (and more chemicals) to control the grain to alcohol conversion.  But, for Square One to receive the USDA's organic approval, they had to skip the chemicals and create a completely new artisanal method of distillation.

Inspired by her move to Marin County, California, Square One creator and CEO, Allison Evanow, wanted to make a spirit that embodied the ethos of the farmer's markets that populated her new hometown.  And to her, that meant combining the quality of a just picked strawberry with earth-conscious thinking.

So, to carry out her organic agenda, Evanow started growing North Dakota Rye in chemical free compost, then distilling that rye with organic yeast and fresh water from the Snake River.  This process earned Square One a coveted nod from the USDA's National Organic Program

Square One offers a decidedly different take on vodka that not only stays true to its green roots but also offers a distinct flavor, unlike virtually every other vodka on the planet.
